Transitions
WVTESOL, the West Virginia affiliate of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) held its 13th annual conference at the Falcon Center at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was an exciting event for English as a Second Language (ESL) professionals from across the state of West Virginia. On Friday, members gathered for pre-conference sessions and a reception on the third floor of the Falcon Center at Fairmont State University for pre-registration and to participate in one of three concurrent sessions and reception. (See the full list of conference activities for details) This year’s conference theme, “Transitions” focused on the immigrant experience. Dr. Miriam Isaacs, a professor at the University of Maryland provided the Keynote address on Saturday: Immigrant Voices: Helping Us Understand Transitions. (See highlights from her presentation) Saturday's activities included a full slate of concurrent sessions that focused on technology and book based instruction, instructional methods and research, and networking opportunities for instructors and coordinators. During the conference luncheon that afternoon, the WVTESOL Vice-President Claudia Nickolson the 2010 Conference Organizational Meeting, where new members were elected to the WV TESOL Board of Directors. The 2010 Conference concluded at 4pm Saturday afternoon with free textbook giveaways and door prizes.
